Statement from Omnitrax on Hudson Bay Railway Service Update: June 23, 2014
Work is ongoing to resolve the track surfacing challenges that resulted in the suspension of rail service along the Hudson Bay Railway between Gillam and Churchill on Friday, June 20.
OmniTRAX Canada’s engineering team has completed their solid track inspection. Based on the data collected, they have developed a comprehensive work plan to address the impacted areas. Work crews are currently on site, and we have staged the first work train of ballast in Gillam to be delivered to the site as required. At this time, we expect that it will take several days to complete the full scope of work as recommended by our engineers.
We are working hard to restore the access to goods and services that our rail line provides to Northern communities. The reality of our business, and of Northern living, includes managing uniquely Northern infrastructure challenges, particularly during the spring thaw. The repairs we are undertaking now will improve this section of the rail line for the long-term benefit of the North.
We will continue to do everything that we can to ensure that full service on the Hudson Bay Railway is restored as soon as possible. This includes enlisting the assistance of any available contractors in order speed up the completion of the required repairs to the track surface. However, the safety of our employees and customers is our number one priority, and we will not resume service on the line until the required track resurfacing has been completed to our satisfaction.
We are committed to providing updates on the restoration of service as information becomes available. Regular status updates will be distributed to customers and the community, as well as posted on www.omnitraxnorth.ca.
