Leaf Rapids began on an esker, a glacial ridge, free of permafrost. In present day Leaf Rapids, a permit must be obtained to before cutting down any trees within the town limits. Leaf Rapids was the location of a large copper/zinc mine that closed in 2002. It was an experimental town with modern convenience and luxury in a northern environment.
The hub of the community is the Town Centre Complex. The town centre is unique in that it was one of the first communities with most retail and services located under one roof. The town was the first in Canada to ban single-use plastic bags. The Town of Leaf Rapids offers 2 to 6 bedroom houses for rent and sale, non-furnished and furnished available, call or email: 204-473-2436, firstname.lastname@example.org
The long and warm summer days are ideal for anyone who loves the outdoors. Within the town limits there are tennis courts, playgrounds, ball diamonds, track and field grounds, football and soccer field. Manitoba’s most northerly nine-hole golf course is within a 15 minute walk from the Town Centre Mall and is free to the public.
The trail that runs around the town is a favourite for residents to walk for fitness, company and to partake in stunning sunsets. If hiking is your thing, walking paths and bush trails wind in and out of the surrounding forest and across the crest of eskers, where sinkholes thousands of years old, give character to the landscape.
Your hikes will take you deep into a forest that is unlike any other, past waterfalls and rapids. Sandy beaches offer recreation for the whole family at Turnbull Lake (4 km SE) and Newfie Beach (30 km N). The water is cool and clear and offers a refreshing swim.
The nearby Churchill River system provides hundreds of miles of safe navigable waterways. It is a fisherman’s dream come true for Northern Pike and Walleye. Several lakes in the area are stocked with rainbow trout. Leaf Rapids boat launches provide easy access to the Churchill River, which which connects Granville Lake, Opachauanau Lake, and South Indian Lake, a fisherman's paradise!
